Teacher fired by Catholic school after artificial insemination

A teacher fired after becoming pregnant through artificial insemination was expected to tell jurors her version of events as the trial in her lawsuit against a Roman Catholic archdiocese and two of its schools entered its second day.

Christa Dias has sued the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and the schools over her 2010 dismissal, contending they fired her simply because she was pregnant and unmarried. Her attorney, Robert Klingler, told a federal jury in opening statements Tuesday that the firing violated federal law prohibiting pregnancy discrimination. The trial was set to continue on Wednesday.

The archdiocese's attorney, Steve Goodin, told jurors "there was no discrimination," saying Dias was fired for violating a contract that he says required her to abide by Catholic doctrine. The archdiocese has said that artificial insemination violates that doctrine and is immoral.

Anna Pierre, North Miami Mayoral Candidate Who Claims She Was Endorsed by Jesus Christ, Comes in Last

A North Miami mayoral candidate who said she secured an endorsement from on high finished far back in Tuesday's election. Anna Pierre, a registered nurse who claimed she was being endorsed by Jesus Christ, finished last among the seven candidates with 56 votes, or just 0.83 percent.

"Yes, Jesus endorsed me!" Pierre said during a stop at the Gwen Margolis Community Center Tuesday morning as the polls opened. "I'm not nuts, if I'm a freak and nuts for Jesus, let it be! Let the world know that Jesus is it and when you have Jesus on your side you can go on." The Jesus claim was made on a campaign flyer posted to Pierre's Facebook page that reads "Anna Pierre, RN, is endorsed by Jesus Christ" and features a photo of the savior.

Perk Based Decision Judgment

New Jersey Woman Admits to Phony Cancer Scheme

A southern New Jersey woman who scammed relatives and others out of cash, meals and even a wedding by falsely claiming she had bladder cancer will likely escape a jail sentence. A plea bargain calls for Stilley to receive four years probation when she's sentenced July 26. She also will have to pay restitution ranging from $15,000 to $20,000 and perform at least 100 hours of community service.

Prosecutors say that in February 2011, Stilley told those close to her and posted on Facebook that she had been diagnosed with cancer. In April, she said her condition had worsened, and supporters soon raised more than $10,000 after she said she didn't have medical insurance.

'Montel' psychic once told Amanda Berry's mom she was dead

After 19 months of no answers about her missing daughter's whereabouts, Amanda Berry’s mother, Louwana Miller, turned to a psychic. Sylvia Browne, resident clairvoyant for "The Montel Williams Show," told her bluntly in 2004, "She's not alive, honey. Your daughter's not the kind who wouldn't call." "I lost it," Miller (now deceased) said at the time, claiming she believed "98 percent" in Browne, who was obviously wrong: Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were all found alive nine years later. Browne also erroneously envisioned Amanda's jacket in a dumpster with "DNA on it." This is why you don't see more headlines like "Psychic wins lottery," and why you shouldn't consult psychics from cheesy talk shows about anything that matters.

'Hitler child' goes on trial in Germany for 10 racist murders

The surviving member of a neo-Nazi cell went on trial on Monday for a series of racist murders that scandalized Germany and exposed authorities' inability or reluctance to recognize right-wing hate crime. Beate Zschaepe, 38, is charged with complicity in the murder of eight Turks, a Greek and a German policewoman between 2000 and 2007, as well as two bombings in immigrant areas of Cologne and 15 bank robberies.

"With its historical, social and political dimensions, the NSU trial is one of the most significant of post-war German history," lawyers for the family of the first victim, flower seller Enver Simsek, said in a statement.

Few expect Zschaepe to explain herself at the trial. The Norwegian anti-immigrant mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in 2011, wrote to Zschaepe last year addressing her as "Dear Sister" and urging her to use the trial to spread far-right ideology.
